In which year were you first elected commissioner? Why did you decide to run? I was elected in 2010 and my first year as a Commissioner was 2011. After I was appointed to the Cass County Planning Commission, I began to attend the BOC meetings. I was impressed. Later on I was appointed to the Parks Board and served as secretary. In January of 2010 during a meeting, I thought to myself, I want to serve as a Commissioner and help. That was my decision and I have never regretted it. Cass County government exists for our residents. I am proud of our government services; our employees, department heads and elected officials go above and beyond. They do a great job. I have a great interest in and a fondness for Cass County. Early on, I wanted to make sure our residents knew that the County was here for them. I wanted to let the townships and Village that I represent know that I was there to help if they needed it, and I believe they know that. I want to make sure Cass County thrives and becomes an important part of southwest Michigan.
What is the biggest goal you have for Cass County this term? I have a number of goals and to me all are big! One goal is to complete the historic courthouse and see all the offices from the County Building (Annex) move into it. I want to help achieve a balanced budget. We need to look at some of our policies and make some changes. Making sure our employees, department heads and elected officials have what they need to be successful. An ongoing goal is to let our residents know that we exist for them and will help.
It is important to me for the residents of my district to know that I was elected to represent them and that I will do that to the best of my ability.
Which major project or initiative do you most look forward to this term? I look forward to the completion of the historic courthouse. I look forward to all of the above goals. An ongoing goal is to let our residents know that Cass County government exists for them.
Fun facts: We have lived in Cass County for more than 20 years. It's really home; growing up we moved quite a bit. I had been in eight different schools by the time I was a freshman in high school. Jerry and I met at Bradley University and in our married life, we once moved three times in four years. When we lived in Saline, I taught at Huron Valley Women's Prison and while waiting outside to go into the prison, another teacher and I helped stop an escape.
